At The NoMad Hotel
“Design ‘N Gather,” the much-heralded, annual mosaic design competition created by Artaic – Innovative Mosaic and sponsored by Bostik Smart Adhesives, is gearing up for its 2018 edition. The competition welcomes designers and collaborative groups from all disciplines to design in Artaic’s mosaic software, Tylist™. Designers will come up with a unique signature creation, which re-defines mosaic design.
This year the location for the competition is inside the iconic Cupola at the NoMad Hotel. This is a chance for your design to be permanently installed in this world-renowned hotel in the heart of New York City!
The nomad hotel
The Cupola sits atop the second floor rooftop’s northwest corner. It has been painstakingly restored to its original grandeur from the turn of the century. This was an existing architectural feature on the building that had no real use, other than as an architectural embellishment.
Now, as a New York City landmark that is open year-round, The Cupola is used for a variety events. From January through March, you’ll find it hosting 12-person dinners, while from April through December it’s most often booked alongside the seasonal tented rooftop and provides a fun pop-up moment for social or corporate events.
At these times The Cupola is the tarot reader’s den, a pop-up product display location for a launch, or the special place where the wedding cake is displayed during a rooftop wedding. It’s been popular for wedding proposals, cognac after hours parties, and cocktail hours with hors d’oeuvres.
The winning design will complement not only the existing Cupola, but the Interior Rooftop and the Exterior Rooftop (tented and bare) design. Competition participants should consider the versatility of events that take place in the Cupola and seek to provide a level of elegance mixed with whimsy and flair to create an impactful design.
NoMad Hotels are grounded in the idea of a hotel as a singular great home combining narrative with the finest talents in architecture & design, art curation, and exceptional food & beverage. It is not just a place to sleep but a place to be hosted and cared-for. The heart of NoMad’s culture is expressed through a New York sensibility that effortlessly combines a worldliness and elegance, an acceptance of all people and a striving for excellence. It is at once deferential to our past but also looking forward, celebrating the tension between uptown and downtown.
NoMad New York is housed in a turn of the century Beaux-Arts building that has been fully restored to its original grandeur with interiors by French designer Jacques Garcia. The hotel is intended as a fresh take on the classic grand hotels of Europe with a distinct New York sensibility. The design of the hotel was inspired by the Parisian flat of Garcia’s youth. The 168 rooms are residential in feel and decorated in his classic, timeless style. Each room is appointed with hand-selected, richly textured custom-designed furnishings and original artwork. The soaring ceilings throughout the public spaces provide a fine gathering place to enjoy dining, drinking and socializing. The NoMad Hotel is located on the corner of 28th and Broadway, just north of Madison Square Park.
The Tools
Artaic Tile Palette
Competition participants can design with any of these tile colors, using Vitreous Glass in 3/8” or 3/4”, or in combination of the two sizes. With over 100 colors to choose from, designers and architects can create high level detail within their artwork.
Competition participants’ proposed design must include the ceiling and the walls, up to the existing cabinetry. They have the option of extending this scope to also include the sidewalls of the ribs.
Bostik Grout Palette
Bostik’s Dimension® RapidCure™ pre-mixed, glass-filled grout, available in 15 designer colors, is a unique product that allows light to pass through the grout joint and into the tile.
This glass grout is the only product Artaic uses for backlit tile installations and must used for submissions.
Artaic’s Tylist™ Software
To enter the competition, each mosaic piece must be designed using Artaic’s mosaic software, Tylist™.
Tylist™ enables designers to easily collaborate with the robotic manufacturing systems Artaic provides, easing the creation of modern mosaics by increasing design flexibility, decreasing lead times and reducing costs. For Design ‘N Gather competitors can use the software and create an unlimited range of possibilities.
